Humanity, go out and pick a switch

Last night I had a lengthy discussion with a friend of mine about the state of the world and what part do we plan to play in it. Normally conversations like that will draw me in, at least up to the point when a person's voice becomes a monotone blob of disjointed words and phrases. It goes something like this:

"See BLAH BLAH is the reason BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH, I'm serious. If you just look at BLAH BLAH BLAH BLAH it makes a perfect circle."

Well, you get the point. I have the attention span of a retarded gnat. But it just so happens I take sustaining life on the planet seriously, who knew?

As the conversation continued and he went on and on with his conspiracies from a biblical standpoint and the fallacies of man in general, I only had one question to ask him, “Why do you think we fucked it up?" To that he had no reply, but a lot of God's plan made its way into the mix. I was about to zone out when I had a random thought, what if mother nature was rearing humanity, how would things be different? And consider this, what if she was disciplining us right now?

Mother nature should be more like our parents.

I was a good kid that just happened to get into trouble at least once a day. In those instances when creativity caused some "issue" with the parental units, they applied serious foot-to-ass without prejudice. My mom was a housewife, sadistic on many levels, she taught me to skate and helped me build my first go-cart. She was also the person who waited until I was naked in the tub to put maximum leather to ass. How they would sniff out my handiwork is still a mystery to me, but I put those moments in the "you're gonna need me when you're old" file and wait patiently to give them their come-uppance.

My point is this, parents are good judges and in some cases, executioners (not killing, just exacting punishment). So if that's true, maybe Mother Nature handles things with her children in similar fashion.

Considering all the hurricanes, earthquakes, super storms and other natural disasters of late, it seems pretty obvious that we take nature’s role in the game too lightly. Let's not forget the irreversible damage done to the Earth like global warming due to deforestation and pollution, whose effects are not fully realized as of yet. Already we see some of the results; erratic weather patterns, premature glacial drift, polar cap disintegration, and let's not forget the record-making warmer climates around the world. Yep, Mother Nature is spankin' that ass around the world.

Here's the clincher to me, we've only seen the tip of the iceberg (pun intended). We have no idea how far-reaching our mistakes have gone. For example, what if in our arrogance to create a new widget, we destroyed a microbe needed for our survival; well illnesses would eventually run rampant. There's no healthier bacterium to help sustain the lives we so desperately try to make better. Slap, nature 1, humans 0.

Mother Nature is not dumb. All living things are her children, some better than others. At some point you have to think she'd stop with the "time outs" and do something drastic to turn us around. It's documented that we've only been on a part of the family for a few million years. Sharks, ferns and even cockroaches have had seniority than we do, will we get kicked out of the family because we simply refuse our social responsibility? The Earth is alive, and like any living creature it produces antibodies to protect itself. I for one don't want to consider myself a virus, but looking at all the damage we've done, how can we not?
